Harper Government Introduces the Pooled Registered Pension Plans Act,
November 17, 2011, OTTAWA DID YOU KNOW (GST/HST RETURNS)? As per Canada Revenue Agency guidelines, if a business is an annual GST/HST filer AND the total GST/HST tax owing (line 109) in a fiscal year is over $3000., the business is required to make QUARTERLY INSTALMENTS for GST/HST in the subsequent reporting year. If the business fails to make instalment payments, interest and penalties are applied. Canada Revenue Agency's protocol on payroll remittance overpayments is not very "user-friendly": CRA now claims it is not required to return payroll remittance overpayments to the remitter. This means you need to adjust one or more subsequent payroll remittances. Canada Revenue Agency's protocol on meals is that unless it is a staff event such as a summer BBQ or Christmas Party (there are a limited number of events allowed per year), only 50% of the GST/HST can be claimed as an ITC. To implement the proper meals tax rate in QuickBooks, include two additional "Sales Tax Items" in your Item List: If your province has GST, include one Sales Tax Item for GST Meals (line 103) and one for GST Meals ITC (line 106). The rate for these Tax Items is 2.439%. Continue on to the "Final Step" listed below. If your province has HST, include one Sales Tax Item for HST Meals (line 103) and one for HST Meals ITC (line 106). The rate for these Tax Items is 5.66%. Continue on to the "Final Step" listed below. Final Step: Add a sales tax code (such as "M") in the Sales Tax Code List, ensuring that you mark it as "Taxable". Then link either the GST Tax Items (one for purchases, one for sales) or the HST Tax Item (one for purchases, one for sales) that you created. Utilize the "M" tax code in your meal purchase transactions. Check out our links to commonly-used resources. HST BRITISH COLUMBIA, HST ONTARIO - HOW TO IMPLEMENT British Columbia and Ontario will revert to HST on July 1st. Print this PDF file explaining how to impose HST tax codes into your company file. Be sure to revise your sales items in the "Item Codes List", relevant tax codes in your Customer Centre, accounts on the Chart of Accounts and "Sales Tax" in "Preferences". QUICKBOOKS 2011 & 2012 ISSUES/QUICKBOOKS SOLUTIONS Issue #1. If you find that the Chart of Accounts won't load, press and hold your "ESC" key for about 5 seconds. Close the software. Perform a shutdown of your computer. Restart your computer and restart QuickBooks. Issue #2. The "1" and other single-penny (.01, .09) characters may not calculate properly in the "rate" and "amount" field in a Sales Receipt where the calculated "Amount" is less than 10 cents. Be sure that the "Amount" column is calculating correctly as you progress through the Sales Receipt. Issue #3. If you are getting dumped out of the software regularely the solution may be as simple as adding a penny in the Employee Centre for Vac Pay O/S for all terminated employees. Issue #4. "Payroll" may not automatically license if you have registered for same. Contact Intuit Canada for assistance. Issue #5. There is no option to export the "Payroll Item List" as an ".iif" file so that it can be imported into another QuickBooks company file. No solution. Issue #6. Transactions posted PRIOR TO converting to QuickBooks 2008 will not calculate taxes correctly if you change any value within the transaction: The GST and/or PST will zero-out. The solution is to change all tax codes in the transaction to something other than what they should be. Use your tab key to move to the field after the "Tax" column. Then, move back to the "Tax" column and change change the Tax Code back to what it should be. This will ensure that the taxes calculate correctly in the GST and/or PST fields. Issue #7. When updating from an earlier version of QuickBooks (prior to QB 2008), taxes will not calculate correctly in both customer and vendor "memorized" transactions. The "Invoice To" field may not fill in correctly from Memorized Transactions. You must re-create and re-memorize all transactions in the "Memorized Transaction List" upon converting to QB 2010.
